STS-110 Payload / 8A

Space Shuttle Atlantis was launched on April 8th, 2002 on Assembly mission 8A carrying the first truss element, the S0 truss. The S0 truss is the first major external truss section of the ISS, a 43 foot long element that will lay the foundation for a cross-beam that will stretch more than 350 feet. Other truss segments will be linked to the S0 truss on future missions. It will support almost an acre of solar panels and cooling radiators. Attached to the S0 will be a railcar called the Mobile Transporter. On next mission STS-111, it will be coupled with a base system for Canada's robotic arm, the Canadarm -2 and it will allow the robotic arm to ride up and down the length of the football field long finished truss. The S0 truss has hardware for other station elements. It carries the umbilicals for Destiny and also the umbilicals for the future Node 2 module (see STS-120). Also carries an umbilical tray for the future Node 3 module. Another piece of hardware is the Airlock Spur which will connect to Quest Airlock. This will act as a ladder, so astronauts exiting the airlock during an EVA can move to the truss section of the station.

The making of this papermodel was made from EVA and Robotics squematics for this mission. The model is available in 2 scales, 1:144 and 1:100 via Paypal.

Enjoy !
